Roof Hail Damage Tips: Do’s and Don’ts
Roof hail damage do's and don'ts from 303 Roofer's Chris Kane — avoid scams
All right, let's get to it because it's hail season here in Colorado and we've already seen how destructive it can be on some people's homes, especially their roofs. However, we have a team here in Colorado that can help make some repairs and even replace your roof. It's 303 Roofer and in today's sponsored segment we're joined by Chris Cain, the owner.
Welcome back to GDC, Chris. Haven't seen you in a minute. Yep, it's been a little bit, but we're back again. Perfect timing, 'cause we're busy. So let's go over some quick dos and don'ts. If a homeowner thinks they have some hail damage to their house, their roof, whatever it may be. Yeah, let's start with don'ts so we can end on a positive note.
Let's do that. So when you have hail in your area, on your home, you're probably gonna get people knocking on your door. There's nothing wrong with that and, you know, I, I don't like it personally. Yes. I, I don't think many people do like it, but I would just say don't sign anything that they put in front of you.
Just be very leery of signing it. They, they might say, you know, "Just sign this to give me permission to get on your roof." Mm-hmm. Don't do it. They might say, you know, "Just sign this to give me permission to talk to your insurance company." Well, that could be okay, as long as you do your due diligence and make sure they're a good company.
You know, I would just say don't sign it because what I'm seeing, and, and we're working with quite a few c- um, homeowners that have signed, and what they're actually signing is a contract- Hmm ... that they're tied into. So just keep in mind, if you do sign something, you do, in your home, you do have a 72-hour right of rescission, so you can always go back and cancel it.
But, but really, in general, with no matter what you're signing, make sure you read it first. And they give it to you on a tablet, so it makes it more difficult, you know- Right ... versus, like, on a piece of paper where you can, you know, obviously look at it and read it and then sign it. But always, no matter what it is that you're signing, read it first.
Um, then I'd say, you know, another don't, uh, don't pay anything up front. You know, really, just don't ever pay anything up front. There's, there's no reason to. Um, you know, all of us, uh, roofing companies, we, we have contracts with material suppliers. Mm-hmm. They will carry that cost, you know, for 30 days.
There's no reason to pay anything up front. Wait until the job is done. It only takes a day or two to finish a roof. So if you, once you pay someone, you, you lose a lot of leverage. So just wait until the job is done, you know, that permits are pulled, that, um, inspection is passed, the yard is cleaned up.
Then you can pay them. You know, or if you're waiting to get paid by your insurance company, you know, we wait until you get paid by your insurance company so you're not out of pocket for anything. So- That's great. Yeah, you just, I just think just never pay any, anyone up front. There's absolutely no reason for it, and if they're asking for it, you have to ask, "Well, why are you doing that?"
Because, you know, you give it to them, what if they never come back? Right. You know? And, and, or what if they say, "Well, you know, I don't need to do this job now. I have this money. You know, I'll do it down the road." So I, I just say don't pay anyone up front at all. Those are great 'cause it's simple just to sign something or write a check or something, then you don't know if they're gonna do the job properly.
Exactly. Or if you're locked in. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. You know, another, um, thing that I just wanna put out there, 'cause there are a lot of really good roofing companies. Right. Um, but there also unfortunately are some bad ones, and there was a graphic that was just up a minute ago by the Better Business Bureau that, that shows that, um, what is it?
61% of problems in the roofing industry- Right here ... they get resolved, right? Unfortunately, 25%, uh, of the complaints go unresolved, but the, the last one is the most important, that 14% of complaints, they're unable to locate the contractor. Because it's probably someone that's just from out of state. You know, they're storm chasers.
They came in, the storm came in, they're knocking on doors, they're collecting money, they're getting contracts. They're not gonna be around in a year if you have an issue. All right. And, and so yeah, uh, it, it goes back to warranties. Your warranty is only as good as the company that you hire. All right, we only got a minute left.
Let's end on a positive note. Okay. What are some dos? Yeah, dos, you know, really, um, I, I guess the, the biggest since we only have a minute, do your due diligence, as we talked about before. Yep. Check the Better Business Bureau. Check with, um, you know, Google Reviews. Uh, check with friends, check with neighbors.
Um, really just, just that's the most important thing. Don't hire anyone. You're in control. Make sure you make a, a smart decision with who you're going to hire. And you have a quick, uh, some other ones? Well, yeah, we can talk about more if we have more time. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So, um, really ask for to upgrade your shingle.
You know, never, um, a- accept what, what they're telling you for just... 'Cause you don't know, right? Y- you're not in the business. So there's builder shingles, don't do it. There's Class 3 shingles, they're good. But always ask for an upgraded shingle. It's a Class 4 shingle. Mm-hmm. It's impact resistant. It's not going to protect your house in a big storm, but it's going to protect your house better than a Class 3 or definitely a builder shingle.
So certainly ask for an upgrade, um, i- in your shingles. It's, uh, it'll also save you money on your insurance as well, so you can turn that into your insurance company and they'll give you a discount on your, um, on your payments. Here's a good do. You should call 303 Roofer. I agree. That's a good do. Yeah. I like that, brother.
